Asset Tag

Your customers can ask you about the Asset Tag Utility of the Dell Vostro™ A840 Notebook. Depending on their queries, you can help them by sharing the following information with them:

Downloading the Asset Tag Utility


Before downloading the Asset Tag Utility, ask customers to ensure that they have an Internet connection and then perform the following steps:

  1. Save and close any open files and exit any open programs.
  2. Ensure they have a drive for the bootable media (such as a floppy drive or a CD drive).
  3. Access the support.dell.com web site, and then download the Dell Portables Asset Tag utility for the notebook.
  4. Unzip the utility files and run the Asset Tag Utility to create the bootable media.

Your customers can download the Dell™ Portables Asset Tag Utility from support.dell.com to create bootable media (such as a bootable CD or floppy disk), and then use the bootable media to assign an Asset Tag.

The information on how to boot from a CD is also available on the CD supplied with a system board replacement. The Dell Portables Asset Tag Utility may not be available as a download in certain countries.

Using the Asset Tag Utility


You can take your customers through the following steps for using the Asset Tag Utility:

  1. Start the notebook using the bootable media.
  2. Press <F12> immediately after the Dell logo appears.

    If the operating system logo appears, ask customers to wait until they see the Microsoft® Windows™ desktop, and then shut down the notebook and try again.
  3. Press the arrow keys to select the drive containing the bootable media, and then press <Enter>.
  4. Capitalize all letters used.
  5. Type asset, a space, and the new asset tag, and then press <Enter>.
    For example, type the following command on the command line, and then press <Enter>: asset ABCD1234
  6. A NOTE indicates important information that helps you make better use of your computer. NOTE:
    An Asset Tag can have up to 10 characters; any combination of characters excluding spaces is valid.
  7. When the notebook prompts customers to verify the asset tag, they should press <Y>. The notebook displays the new or modified Asset Tag and the Service Tag.
  8. Restart the notebook to exit the Asset Tag Utility.

Viewing Existing Asset and Service Tags


To view the existing Asset and Service Tags, ask customers to do the following:

  1. Start the notebook using the bootable media.
  2. Type asset and then press <Enter>.

Deleting an Asset Tag


To delete an Asset Tag, ask customers to perform the following steps:

  1. Start the notebook using the bootable media.
  2. Type asset /d and then press <Enter>.
  3. When the notebook prompts customers to delete the asset tag, they should press <Y>.

Assigning an Owner Tag


An Owner Tag can have up to 48 characters; any combination of letters, numbers, and spaces is valid. To assign an Owner Tag, your customers need to perform the following steps:

  1. Start the notebook using the bootable media.
  2. Type asset /o, a space, and the new owner tag, and then press <Enter>.
    For example, type the following command on the command line, and then press <Enter>: asset /o ABC Company
  3. When the notebook prompts customers to verify the owner tag, they should press <Y>.

The notebook displays the new Owner Tag.

Deleting an Owner Tag


Your customers can delete an Owner Tag using the following steps:

  1. Start the notebook using the bootable media.
  2. Type asset /o /d and then press <Enter>.
  3. When the notebook prompts them to delete the owner tag, they should press <Y>.

For security reasons, your customers cannot set, change, or delete the Owner Tag if the Administrator password is set.

Ask customers to use one of the Asset Tag options on the screen using the following steps:

  1. Start the notebook using the bootable media.
  2. Type asset, a space, and the option, and then press <Enter>.
